WHY DO WE WORK WITH HOUSEHOLDERS?
The principle aim of the Leicestershire/Northamptonshire Energy Efficiency Advice Centre is to
improve the energy efficiency of houses in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. This helps you save money and helps
Leicestershire/Northamptonshire to meet ambitious energy efficiency goals. What we achieve together will help other
areas of Britain and Europe to follow our lead in the future.

Fuel Poverty
Fuel poverty damages peoples' quality of life and imposes wider costs on the community.
Many vulnerable members of society will die this winter from the effects of fuel poverty.
For more information on fuel poverty visit the National Energy Action (NEA) website
Warm Front is a government funded scheme which provides grants for insulation and heating improvements to qualifying households. For more information, contact www.eaga.co.uk or telephone 0800 316 2814.
Pollution
The Leicester Energy Strategy aims to reduce the city's energy use and carbon dioxide emissions to 50% of 1990 levels by the year 2025.
Leicester's energy comes mostly from the consumption of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas
(called fossil fuels because they are the remains of plants and animals which lived on the Earth millions of years ago).
This uses up finite resources, and the carbon burned in fuel forms carbon dioxide, the main gas blamed for
global warming. Fuel combustion also creates other air pollutants. Many people don't realise the adverse environmental
effects of excessive energy consumption, or that some traditional energy sources will soon run out.
Our behaviour must change to reduce our energy consumption.

Reducing Fuel Costs and Saving Money
Lower fuel costs increases a household disposable income which helps the local economy.
Did you know that most energy efficiency improvements such as loft insulation, cavity wall insulation or low energy lighting actually give a higher rate of return on an investment than a high street bank or building society.
E.g. for a LOW ENERGY Light bulb (20 Watt - 100W equivalent):
Initial cost = £5
Annual Savings = £11
Average Lifetime = 5 years
total savings £55.00, Less cost = £50
This is equivalent to a bank interest rate of 58.9%!
THE FOLLOWING TABLES SHOW HOW A BUILDING SOCIETY SAVINGS ACCOUNT COMPARES WITH ENERGY EFFICIENCY
FOR A SINGLE LOW ENERGY LIGHTBULB. THE FIGURES ARE BASED ON THE AVERAGE LIFE OF THE BULB
(5 YEARS) AND RETURN ON THE INVESTMENT TAKES ACCOUNT OF THE INITIAL COST.
